Participants are invited to share their songs with the class on a weekly basis receiving valuable feedback and suggestions from classmates and instructors Glen Alan and Julian Taylor.
Class Overview:
Come join us for a fun and stimulating class series that will help you develop your own musical style and songwriting ideas. This level 2 class builds on our Level 1 songwriting course. Participants should be experienced songwriters that have at least a year’s worth of writing experience, are comfortable performing in front of a group, familiar with typical pop chord progressions, and have a basic understanding of simple scales and chord relationships. Participants are expected to be familiar with these concepts: verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, middle 8, intro, outro, vamp, and the following terms: — AAA, ABA, ABC, AB, compound and compound/hybrid musical forms etc. Ability to play an instrument is strongly recommended, for vocalists however, your instructor can accompany you if needed. For those with less theory experience we recommend enrolling concurrently with Theory 1 or 2 classes.
Course Outline – Topics covered will include:
Lyric Form and Structure Expanded – learn tools and techniques for writing better lyrics and rhymes
Motifs – Why they are the backbone of every hit song, how to pick them out, and create and employ them in your own songs
A variety of material by commercially successful songwriters of varying styles will be explored and analyzed throughout the course allowing participants to discover the tools that hit songwriters use
Developing habits that if put into practice will accelerate your musical development & songwriting chops
The use of the piano as an arrangement tool will also be covered
The importance of rhythm and space in melody and arrangements
Students will notate their own rhythmic and melodic ideas to effectively communicate them to others
The following arrangement techniques will be covered:
A) solo performance – instrumental, piano or guitar and voice
B) typical rock band (drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and voice) will be covered
C) preparing a professional arrangement for a recording studio session
Participants will share their songs for the class, and have the opportunity to perform at our school concerts and other performance venues in Toronto
Learn how to market and promote your songs and how to actually make a living as a songwriter
As part of their final class, participants will have the opportunity to have their songs professionally recorded at Mint Music’s Recording Studios!
