A graduate of the University of Toronto, Barry Livingston has played at
jazz festivals across Canada, and in New York City. He is a former
member of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and has also played with
Juno-winning saxophonist, Jane Bunnett. He has attended the Banff
Centre where he studied and collaborated with many jazz greats,
including Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Muhal Richard Abrams and
Barry is also a respected and established music educator, with over 20
years of private and classroom experience, including Langara
Community College, Gulf Islands Secondary School, Royal St. Georges
College, Toronto New School, and University of Toronto Schools (UTS).
Barry has also taught with MINT Music for several years, and is popular
with students for his private piano teaching, and workshops in song
writing and music theory.
He also has hosted popular jazz and global music programs for CIUT FM
(Toronto), CFRO FM (Vancouver), and has contributed to CBC radio.
Barry’s music reviews and articles have been published in Penguin Eggs
Folk Magazine, Toronto Life, Scandinavian Press, Coda and WholeNote
For the last 6 years, Barry has led and composed for his jazz group,
Barry Livingston Group, which features some of Canada’s best
musicians, including Suba Sankaran, George Koller and Colleen Allen.
The group has performed at many high profile Toronto venues, and at
the Steel City Jazz Fest, and McMaster University LiveLab theatre.
