Course overview:

The purpose of this class is to learn and play popular songs that will increase your own repertoire of performable songs. By playing a variety of songs by different artists and styles you will gain skills that will increase your overall musicianship, enabling you over time to learn music more quickly and play with greater confidence. We will learn and play through the material as a class, together, and if you want you can even sing along. This class will help you develop a good feel for rhythm, so you can play with others with greater ease and enjoyment. Class members are invited to perform as a group at our school concerts at the end of the course which is free for anyone to attend.

All of this will occur in a laid back, no pressure atmosphere. My goal is to teach you how to play the guitar and to have you enjoy doing it. We will concentrate on easy to play popular songs whose elements are easily adaptable to other tunes. From “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran to “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan and anything in between. Requests are encouraged. We’ll also work on the 12 bar blues progression and how to apply simple one note at a time improvisation techniques. We’ll do this with songs like “Stuck in the Middle with You” by Stealer’s Wheel and “Pride and Joy” by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Class size is limited to 6 people.

Other topics that we will touch on are:
– Right hand strumming patterns
– Reading chord charts and tablature
– String Bending (and how to fake it)
– Sus4 chords
– the 1,6,4,5 progression and much more

Toronto Guitar School Instructor:

Richard Kahl – Guitar Teacher

Richard Kahl has played and taught the guitar professionally for over 40 years. Between 1985 & 2008 he played with the well-known Canadian Rolling Stones Tribute Band “The Blushing Brides” performing in over 2000 shows. He has recorded over 15 albums for the “Classic Albums Live” organization and also plays with “The Dylan Tree – A Celebration of the Bob Dylan Song Book”.

Richard teaches both electric and acoustic guitar. He can also teach basic music reading and theory if the student wishes to learn those skills. For this Richard employs the Mel Bay Method series of books. Richard has extensive experience teaching both adults and children (6 and up) and also with children with special needs (ADHD and autism spectrum disorder). Richard also has a B.A. in Psychology.
Richard’s philosophy around teaching is; if the student enjoys the experience and learns what he or she really wants to know (specific songs or solos) then they will be more likely to continue with lessons for the long term. Richard always tries to provide positive reinforcement and never talks down to the student. His mantra is “Set Achievable Goals”.
