In this course we will be going over the fundamentals of how to optimize a space in your home for recording. The course will be interactive and reliant on the participants’ specific needs and wants. It will also utilize real tracks that the participants can use to get familiar with various recording fundamentals and topics.

Both Hardware and Software topics will be discussed:

Hardware Topics that will be discussed include:

1. Studio vs consumer Monitors – What is the difference?
2. Studio headphones vs consumer headphones – What is the difference?
3. Microphones – Dynamic vs condenser vs ribbon mics as well as popular brands
4. Selecting an Audio Interface – Why you need one and what to look for
5. Other equipment: Mic stands, XLR cables, Patch Cables
6. Recording Fundamentals when setting up hardware such as monitors and microphones
a. Direct Input instruments
b. Mic techniques for Vocalists
c. Mic techniques to capture the room sound
d. Room treatment for recording
e. Other instrument specific mic techniques (dependant on participants in the course)

Software Topics that will be discussed include:

1. Different Digital Audio Workstation software makers and which one is right for the Home Studio?
2. Recording Fundamentals withing the DAW
a. Setting up a session
b. Configuring the Audio Interface to work with your DAW
c. Creating an Audio Track
i. How to route audio inputs and outputs
d. Loading backing tracks
e. Setting up Folders
f. Setting up Channel Groups
g. Lining up tracks
h. Considering Phasing issues when recording with multiple mics
i. Basic Mixing considerations:
i. Equalization (EQ) – what it is and how to use it
ii. Compression
iii. Panning
iv. Delay
v. Automation

At the end of the course the participant should be comfortable recording tracks within the home environment and mixing tracks together from various sources to have a desirable end result.

Course Costs:

Prepay before the class begins and take the entire course for the reduced rate of $240 instead of the regular rate of $320. Don’t wait too long to register and pay for this course as our Level 1 Classes are very popular and even though it may not show on the meetup there are already people that have signed up and prepaid for this course through the Toronto Guitar School website and the school itself.

Requirements:

No prior knowledge of recording hardware or software necessary, just a willingness to have fun and make some new friends!
