Brazilian guitarist, composer, and educator André Valério is a leading voice in Brazilian music in Canada. He has toured internationally, performing at festivals and venues across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Europe, and Brazil.
Valério initiated his musical studies in São Paulo, where he also completed a degree in Pedagogy at the University of Guarulhos (2009). After moving to Toronto, he earned a degree in Guitar Performance at Humber College (2017), winning the David Stillwell Arrangement Award twice.
As a recording artist, Valério released his debut album Chrysalis (2017), featuring original compositions performed by top Toronto musicians. His second album, Spiritwood Jazzscape: Quantum Echoes of Brazil (2025), showcases his unique blend of Brazilian rhythms and contemporary jazz, including the dream-inspired single Infinite Night.
Valério is a member of Tio Chorinho, the only Canadian ensemble dedicated to Brazilian choro. Their latest album Tempestuoso (2024) won Instrumental Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. He also co-leads the Oná Ensemble, a chamber jazz group bridging Brazilian choro and jazz.
An active collaborator, he has performed and recorded with celebrated Canadian artists including Colleen Allen, Rob Christian, Laura Fernandez, and many of Toronto’s top jazz and world music musicians. Alongside his performing career, Valério is a dedicated educator, passionate about inspiring students through performance, composition, and improvisation.
