Hinad Alshuhuf: Syrian Oud Player and Cultural Bridge
Hinad is a Syrian oud-player whose journey reflects resilience, artistry, and a profound dedication to cultural preservation. Arriving in Canada two years ago, Hinad has used his music to heal, connect, and inspire, transforming personal experiences of loss and resilience into performances that celebrate the shared humanity heritage across diverse cultures.
His artistry bridges traditional and modern music, showcasing the oud’s ability to shine in genres like flamenco, contemplative music, and Middle Eastern compositions. Notable highlights of Hinad’s artistic journey include contributions to UNESCO’s 2019 publication Traditional Syrian Music, celebrating Syria’s intangible heritage, and dynamic collaborations with Toronto-based initiatives like Diar Band and BAM-collective. Beyond performances, Hinad has designed and implemented several programs to educate refugee children in Lebanon about cultural heritage and identity through music, instilling in them a deep appreciation for their roots.
Since settling in Canada, Hinad has enriched Toronto’s cultural tapestry through impactful performances at the Luminato Festival 2023, Global Toronto 2024, and the Arab Music Festival in Montreal. He has also been an integral participant in the Small World Music Centre’s Incubators program and a recipient of the Toronto Arts Council’s Newcomer Artist Mentorship.
By weaving the oud’s 5,000-year legacy with contemporary influences, Hinad continues to amplify the richness of Syrian music and contribute meaningfully to Toronto’s arts community.
