This course is designed to put strong semi-professional players together to create music, and to teach students how to effectively get a band up and running quickly. If you’ve been stuck in the “we’ll book a gig when we’re ready” mantra or have been searching for other players to form a group with for months or even years, then this course is for you!
This class is all about putting the pieces together. Students who are fluent on their instruments are invited to be a part of a teacher-led ensemble. Instruments include guitar (acoustic or electric), bass, drums, piano and vocals.
Using repertoire chosen by the class, Scott Neary will rehearse the band and get them gig ready (yes a real performance!). Each class will focus on playing through the repertoire, tightening up weak sections, and leaving the class with tips on effective rehearsing and musical communication.

Scott Neary – Guitar Instructor
From the quiet mining town of Wabush, Labrador, Scott’s love of music has taken him far from home. After completing a Masters in Jazz Studies at the esteemed University of North Texas, Scott was hired as a Full-Time Professor of Music at UDLA in Quito, Ecuador. He now calls Toronto home, where he maintains a busy schedule as an in demand guitarist, vocalist, composer/arranger, and teacher.
Scott holds a Bachelors of Music with Honors (Jazz Studies) from St. Francis Xavier University, and a Masters of Music (Jazz Studies) from the University of North Texas. Scott also has his Grade 9 Royal Conservatory in piano. While attending the University of North Texas, Scott was a member of the six time Grammy nominated One O’clock Lab Band, and performed alongside such notable musicians as Peter Erskine, Dennis Diblasio, Frank Greene, and Stockton Helbing. He can be heard on the recording Lab 2013.
Scott maintains an active schedule as a freelance performer, playing jazz, rock, bluegrass, funk/soul/R&B, and folk music. He fronts the indie/rock band SNEERY, is a member of the jazz/fusion group Dog Leg Dilemma, and works as the musical director and guitarist for vocalist Steven Taetz. He can be heard performing weekly at The Cloak and Dagger with The Hit Pickers, and also maintains a weekly jazz residency at Kama Classical Indian Restaurant.
